An Oxnard man died late Sunday in a scuba diving accident just off the Channel Islands, Coast Guard officials said.
Jack Youngstrom, 35, was pronounced dead at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard at 11 p.m. Sunday, the coroner said.
Youngstrom, a newly certified diver on his first nighttime dive, was diving in about 15 to 20 feet of water when he became separated from his dive partner about 8:30 p.m., officials said. When he rose to the surface, he became entangled in a large concentration of kelp and possibly panicked before drowning, officials said.
Youngstrom’s three companions were uninjured.
