Oregon State guard Brent Barry, acquired by the Clippers in a draft-day trade with the Denver Nuggets, signed a three-year contract, the club announced Monday.
Terms were not revealed, but under the guidelines of the NBA’s new rookie salary scale, Barry, the 15th player drafted, will make $2.39 million to $2.87 million.
Barry comes from an NBA background. His father Rick, is a Hall of Fame forward who led the Golden State Warriors to the NBA title in 1974-75. Brent’s brother, Jon, 26, plays for the Milwaukee Bucks.
Asked if he received any advice from his father to prepare for the opening of training camp Friday at UC Irvine, Barry said: “My dad’s advice is kind of outdated. It’s a different game now, so I don’t really have to listen to him anymore. I talked with Jon and [Golden State Warrior guard] Chris Mullin and they just told me to make sure I stay healthy and to work hard.”
A shooting guard at Oregon State, Barry will be converted to point guard by Clipper Coach Bill Fitch.
“Once training camp starts, [Fitch] wants me to be able to play point guard, shooting guard and small forward so that I’m able to go out and execute the plays at all three positions,” Barry said. “Coach Fitch has been around a long time. That’s certainly a guy I can learn to become a professional from.”
Barry, who averaged 21 points, 3.9 assists and 2.7 steals last season, was acquired with forward Rodney Rogers from Denver for guard Randy Woods and Alabama forward Antonio McDyess, the No. 2 selection in the draft.
