Riverside Arlington upset then-No. 1-ranked Yucaipa at the Yucaipa Invitational cross-country meet Saturday. Arlington had upset then-No. 3 Hemet to move from No. 9 in Division II to No. 2. Anaheim Katella is No. 1. Although Arlington does not have a dominant runner, it has a group that finishes fast and together. Senior Alfonso Ibarra, second at Yucaipa, is considered the Lions’ top runner. Yucaipa’s Sean Clendaniel won in a course-record time of 15:13. . . . Hemet, ranked fourth, is still a major threat to Katella, Arlington and third-ranked Yucaipa. Robert Frichtel, Robert Frost and Nicholas Jacques finished behind Ibarra, but ahead of the rest of Arlington’s pack at Yucaipa. . . . For the Yucaipa girls’ team, sophomore Kim Welsh broke a nine-year-old course record when she won the three-mile race in 17:37. . . . Amy and Jennifer Larson are twins and doubles partners on Chino’s tennis team, and they swept their three matches as Chino beat Don Lugo, 14-4, last Friday. . . . Mary Thornton had 20 kills and five blocks to lead Hesperia’s volleyball team to a five-set victory over Eisenhower on Friday.
