CALDERA MAKES THE ROUNDS: State Assemblyman Louis Caldera (D-Los Angeles) promised to make the abundance of liquor stores in the Boyle Heights area a high-priority issue after meeting with a group of concerned parents.

Caldera is the author of a bill, signed by Gov. Pete Wilson last year, that limits liquor licenses in areas where their issuance could create a law enforcement problem, or where there already is a heavy concentration of establishments selling liquor.

“This meeting helps us understand we’re on the right track,” said Caldera, who met with approximately 30 parents at a Hope in Youth program in East Los Angeles Tuesday.

“I heard about continued concern about problem liquor stores . . . stores that sell to minors or where people congregate and are magnets for delinquents and crime problems. I heard a very clear message regarding a couple of stores in particular.”

Caldera also heard from residents on gun violence and quality of education.

“[Education] definitely touched a nerve,” said Caldera, who is making the rounds in the community while the State Assembly is not in session.
