A Massachusetts couple visiting relatives in Southern California died when another driver plowed into their car at about 70 m.p.h., authorities said Wednesday.
Jill and Thomas Diorio, 27 and 34, were driving north on Beach Boulevard at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when a speeding car heading east on Lincoln Avenue ran a red light and rammed into the driver’s side door of the couple’s car, Traffic Investigator Vincent Delgado said in a statement. The couple died at the scene.
Detectives suspect that the driver of the second car may have been intoxicated when he ran the red light, Delgado said. The man was in fair condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange Wednesday night and has not been cited pending further investigation, authorities said.
Another vehicle that was traveling alongside the couple’s car at the time of the accident was also struck, and the driver of that vehicle suffered minor injuries, police said.
The Diorios lived in Everett, Mass., and were visiting Jill Diorio’s parents in Whittier, police and coroner’s investigators said.
