NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor scored 21 consecutive points in the second half, but Irvine took back the lead late in the game and held on for a 31-28 Sea View League victory Friday night at Newport Harbor High.
The Sailors drove to the Irvine 14 with under a minute left in the game, but Josiah Fredriksen’s fourth-down pass was incomplete.
Trailing, 24-7, at halftime, Chris Morrell led the Sailors back with three consecutive touchdown runs, the last one from nine yards gave Newport Harbor a 28-24 lead with 9 minutes 20 seconds left in the game.
However, Irvine drove 80 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown on Jake Savona’s three-yard run with 5:23 remaining.
Jared Flint, who completed 22 of 28 passes for 249 yards, threw three first-half touchdown passes and Sevan Setian’s 46-yard first-quarter field goal hit the crossbar and bounced over.
