Ventura 28, Rio Mesa 6--Abundio Marin rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns and Kyle Schommer completed 16 of 21 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown to lead Ventura (4-4, 3-2) at Rio Mesa (2-6, 1-4).

Schommer completed his first seven passes. On Cougar scoring drives he was 12 for 12 for 247 yards. Schommer’s main target was Donell Wickett, who caught nine passes for 221 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with a strained left knee with 2:20 to play in the third quarter.

Ventura amassed 485 yards and limited Rio Mesa to 163. The Spartans’ only touchdown came on a 12-yard run by Bruce Samuel with three minutes left. Farhaad Azimi completed four of 15 passes for 78 yards. Randy Hurt made all of the receptions.
