Katella Strip Rezoned for Commercial Use

ORANGE — Concerned that Anaheim’s ambitious expansion plan for the tourist area around Disneyland will cause new businesses to bypass Orange, the city has rezoned a stretch of Katella Avenue in a move that it hopes will make it more competitive.
The City Council agreed this week to change Katella west of Glassell Street from an industrial zone to a commercial-recreational zone, which would allow such enterprises as sports arenas, movie production studios and business schools.
Planners said the 150-acre area along Katella from Glassell to the Santa Ana River is prime for expansion.
The corridor “represents the greatest economic development opportunity in the northwest area,” said Community Development Director Jack McGee at a public hearing on the plan.
