Four-Star Films : ‘Death In Venice’

Luchino Visconti’s chillingly Angst-ridden 1971 film is an adaptation of the Thomas Mann novella about obsessive love. It involves the repressed passion of an aging artist named Aschenbach (Dirk Bogarde, left) for a beautiful boy (Bjorn Andresen) he sees on the Venice beach, during a time of plague. In Visconti’s conception, Aschenbach is actually composer Gustav Mahler, whose haunting Fifth Symphony echoes despairingly on the soundtrack. With Marisa Berenson (right).
