Working at It: If Los Angeles County’s volatile unemployment rate drops again when October numbers are released Friday, it will mark the second drop in as many months. But that’s a big if: Job losses in manufacturing and other industries could offset a big seasonal spurt in teaching employment as schools got completely under way this month. The county’s rate dropped to 7.5% in September from 8.6% in August, which was the highest rate since January.
