South Bay : CEMETERY SEIZED
State officials have seized control of Lincoln Memorial Park, Carson’s troubled cemetery, after an investigation dredged up signs of mismanagement and possible criminal violations.
Lincoln Memorial Park employees returned to work Wednesday when they learned a receiver had been appointed to manage the cemetery’s daily operations.
Cemetery workers had walked off their jobs two weeks ago when the Department of Consumer Affairs took over the investigation and failed to pay them.
Still undecided is who will pay for cemetery improvements, including restoration of the mausoleum and the deepening of the shallow graves. State investigators found some coffins buried just two or three inches underground, and headstones piled in dumpsters and lining the parking lot when they first raided the cemetery during the summer.
