Agoura Hills : Students’ Hopes Are Flush for Toilet Sale

Agoura High School students Lauren Chandler and Matt Greene have taken lots of ribbing lately over an off-beat fund-raiser they organized to benefit their school.

But the two say they will have the last laugh.

They’ll prove to classmates that they can raise money selling new low-flush toilets during a special sale Saturday at the school.

“People call us the Toilet King and Toilet Queen,” said Lauren, laughing. “But we’ll prove it to them that it’s a good idea.”

The toilets--500 in all--were donated by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and the Metropolitan Water District to encourage people to conserve water, said Courtney Waters, a student who is handling publicity.

The toilets, she said, will be sold for $15, and the money will go toward the school prom, school beautification and special events.

There only one catch: The toilets are available just to water district customers. To buy one, a resident must bring a copy of a water bill and a photo ID such as a driver’s license.

Those who buy the new toilets must return their old ones to the school on Dec. 2, agency officials said. Those who don’t, officials said, may be assessed a $100 charge by the district.

Officials said the old toilets will be recycled.
