Kennedy 10, Garfield 7--Defensive back Tommy Gales recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and intercepted a deflected pass on the last play of the game as Kennedy (11-0) avoided an upset at home.
Gales’ fumble recovery on the first play of the second quarter tied the score, 7-7.
Ramiro Esqueda’s 23-yard field goal on the final play of the third quarter provided the winning margin for Kennedy.
Garfield (6-4) drove from its 20-yard line in the last five minutes.
Garcia completed a 31-yard screen pass to Juan Marez on fourth and 24 from the Kennedy 39.
After an incomplete pass and a Garfield holding penalty, linebacker Edgar Meneses sacked Carlos Garcia for a 12-yard loss. After another incomplete pass, Gales came up with his interception.
