Magnitude 8 Quake Rocks Russian Islands

WASHINGTON — A powerful earthquake struck Russia’s Kuril Islands north of Japan on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of deaths or damage, the National Earthquake Center said.
Center spokesman John Minsch said the magnitude 8 earthquake was centered off the sparsely populated island chain about 810 miles north of Tokyo.
