Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the after-school stabbing Tuesday of a 14-year-old girl at Lakewood High School.
The victim, a Long Beach resident and freshman at the school, was in fair condition Wednesday at Long Beach Memorial Hospital where she was brought after four teenage girls attacked her near a gymnasium.
She was stabbed at least four times in the back with a sharp instrument, authorities said. The weapon, not yet recovered, has been reported variously as a knife, a shard of glass or a ballpoint pen, they said.
Deputies, who spent Wednesday sorting through several versions of events from numerous eyewitnesses, are focusing on one girl as the wielder of the weapon, said Sgt. Mason Kenny. She is a runaway and a student at a Long Beach continuation high school. Two of the other suspects are students at Lakewood High, he said.
