ORANGE — A 73-year-old woman was struck and killed Wednesday as she crossed a poorly lit street with her husband, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Vicenta Sarmiento died at 7:30 p.m. at Chapman Medical Center, one hour after she was hit by a car while crossing Hewes Street at Sycamore Avenue, CHP spokeswoman Angel Johnson said. There is no street light at the intersection, which is in an unincorporated area.
The car was driven by a 54-year-old woman, who told officers she did not see the Sarmientos in the roadway because of the low lighting conditions, Johnson said. The driver was not cited, but the accident is under investigation.
Sarmiento’s husband was not injured.
