Newport Harbor, Junior
Basketball/Guard
Verhulst, the Sailors’ only returning starter, helped her team show that it will have to be reckoned with this season. Verhulst averaged 14 points as the Sailors swept through the South Coast Holiday tournament, beating Canyon, Esperanza, Capistrano Valley and University. In the title game Saturday, Newport Harbor trailed University by 10 with four minutes left in the game, but the Sailors scored the final 19 points of the game. Verhulst scored nine of those points to finish with 15. “When it’s late in the game, you definitely want Andree running the offense,” Coach Bob Dukus said.
