WRESTLING ROUNDUP : Calvary Chapel Routs El Modena
- Share via
El Modena wrestling Coach Alan Clinton didn’t see the match between the Vanguards and top-ranked Calvary Chapel as a lesson in futility. Instead, Clinton saw the Thursday night nonleague matchup as a good test for his wrestlers.
But after El Modena, ranked fourth in the county, was routed by Calvary Chapel, 52-16, Clinton and his wrestlers indeed learned a lesson.
“They’re just as tough, or maybe tougher than last year,” Clinton said. “But I did learn something from this. We had better go back to the mat and start working out some more.”
Though El Modena (6-2) started with a loss in the first match at 103, the Vanguards’ Mike Vaun came back with a 33-second pin of Marshall Morgan to give El Modena a 6-3 lead. But the lead was fleeting.
Calvary Chapel’s Tino Archeleta (119 pounds) won by a technical fall to beat Jeff Sacramento, 22-7, and the Eagles (7-0) won the next six matches.
At 125, Matt Azevedo, a recent transfer from Nevada where he was a two-time state champion, pinned El Modena’s Nik Wassiliew in 1:38. Teammate Burt Pierson followed with a 19-4 technical fall over Nick Bradley at 130 pounds.
The Eagles’ Kris Camacho won at 135 after pinning Grant Gardner in 2:54. At 140, Junior Joe Calavitta, a state finalist last season who might be the best wrestler on the Calvary Chapel squad, seemed to manhandle Chris Elder, looking as if he was practicing his takedown and release, where he eventually pinned Elder in 4:58.
Also scoring a technical fall for Calvary Chapel was Phil Wozniak, who beat Nathan Stauber, 20-5, in a 152-pound match. Ty Wilcox, another former Nevada state champion, won his 160-pound match by pinning Nick Long in 2:58. Heavyweight Josh Schultz closed the competition for Calvary Chapel after pinning David Saucedo in 2:50.
