South Bay : COST-SAVING EFFORT
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has voted not to renew a contract with an attorney’s group that handled the overflow of cases from the public defender’s office in the Torrance and Compton courthouses. In a cost-saving move, the supervisors decided to cancel the contract with the Southwest Indigent Defense Panel of Torrance and voted to contract with another, less costly group.
Debbie Crawford of Supervisor Deane Dana’s office said, “We have reached an agreement with another group, the Alternative Public Defender’s Office, that will handle the spillover from the public defender’s office at a lower price.”
Representatives of the Southwest Indigent Defense Panel could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
