Some athletes were also victims of criminals in 1995:
--Guenter Parche, a German man who stabbed tennis star Monica Seles, received a suspended sentence. After Seles’ appeal for a stiffer sentence was denied April 3, she filed another appeal of the sentence in Hamburg, Germany, on July 12.
--Jamal Jackson, a Cleveland State basketball player, was killed Aug. 18 in Boston, his hometown. Reginald Howard, a cousin of Jackson’s girlfriend, Traci Washington, faces second-degree murder charges, but no trial date has been set.
--Nigerian soccer player Igenewari George was killed Sept. 9 by a stray bullet fired by police trying to control a crowd of fans at a game outside Lagos.
--On Oct. 12, Arcadia bookkeeper Susan Bradley was sentenced to two years in state prison and restitution of all missing funds after trainers Craig Lewis and Bill Shoemaker alleged she had taken approximately $200,000 from them.
--John Murray, a spectator at a Chicago Cub game, was banned from Wrigley Field in 1996 and given 18 months’ probation, a $500 fine and 200 hours’ community service after charging the mound and tackling pitcher Randy Myers after he gave up a go-ahead home run in a game Sept. 28.
--Dave Shotkoski, an Atlanta Brave replacement player, was shot to death on March 24 in West Palm Beach, Fla., during what police described as a botched robbery attempt.
