Simmering divisions surfaced in violent protests as New Zealanders celebrated their national day. The government shunned traditional commemorations at Waitangi in the far north after Maori protests at last year’s ceremonies. Waitangi is viewed as the birthplace of New Zealand because that is where the nation’s founding document was signed. In Waitangi, the day took an ugly turn when police were pelted with rocks by whites and Maoris demonstrating in support of Maori sovereignty grievances.
