PREP BOYS’ BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Playa del Rey St. Bernard 59, Cathedral 45--St. Bernard got 23 points from Brandon Granville and held off a Cathedral rally to win the Southern Section IV-AA title at the Bren Center.
Cathedral trimmed a 37-31 deficit to one on two three-point baskets from Danny Lopez to end the third quarter, and then took the lead on a layup by Joey Tapia to begin the fourth. But St. Bernard responded with nine unanswered points to take a lead for good.
Daniel Coleman scored 14 and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Vikings (19-10), who scored 22 points off Cathedral turnovers.
St. Bernard led 29-25 at halftime behind Granville’s 15 points and despite shooting only 12 of 37 (.324) as a team.
Cathedral (15-11) was led by Luis Leal with 16. Lopes finished with 10.
