South County Traffic Center Under Study

The county’s Environmental Management Agency is studying the feasibility of building a traffic operations center in South County.

Such a center would improve traffic flow by allowing officials to synchronize traffic lights during rush hour and respond better to accidents, road construction and other tie-ups.

“The idea would be to provide more centralized control of traffic in the South County area,” said Ignacio G. Ochoa of the county’s Transportation Department.

If the facility is built, it would work in concert with traffic centers already operating in Irvine, Santa Ana and Anaheim.

The Board of Supervisors last week voted to commission a study on the idea. “The center would be an important tool in improving traffic in the South County,” Supervisor Marian Bergeson said.
