The Latina service organization Comision Feminil will hold its fifth annual youth conference Saturday at Cal State Northridge.
More than 600 high school Latinas have registered for the free daylong event, entitled “Adelante Mujer Latina” (Move Forward Latin Woman).
Comision Feminil, which was founded in 1975, says the conference helps motivate young Latinas through sessions with role models in professions including health, business and law. More than 15 workshops led by Latin women will discuss topics such as how to apply for financial aid and what college courses would best achieve career goals.
“It’s a rare opportunity for young Latinas to get advice through the hands-on sessions,” said Annette Castro, spokeswoman for event co-sponsor Councilman Richard Alarcon.
Suzanna Valdez, associate director of public liaison for the White House, will be the keynote speaker.
The conference is from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the CSUN Student Union, 18111 Nordhoff Ave., Northridge.
