Kennedy Names Selbe Girls’ Basketball Coach

John Selbe has been hired as girls’ basketball coach at Kennedy, Athletic Director Janet Berardi said Tuesday.

Selbe, an assistant football coach at the school, is a teacher at Brookhurst Junior High. He was the girls’ basketball coach at Cypress for two seasons, compiling a 38-16 record.

The Centurions were 26-4 and reached the Southern Section Division III-A semifinals in 1994. Selbe was the team’s co-coach the four previous seasons.

Bob Van Herk has resigned as soccer coach at Kennedy, Berardi said.

Van Herk, the team’s coach the last nine seasons, stepped down to concentrate on his work. He is an insurance agent.

Kennedy won seven league titles under Van Herk.

Middle blocker Lara Childress of the Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club and Trabuco Hills High has signed to play for Westmont College in Santa Barbara, her father said.
