El Segundo Launches Billboard Campaign to Lure Businesses

In a move to bring big business to a small town, the city of El Segundo has launched a five-month billboard campaign to draw attention to the seaside city’s unique mix of business and small-town charm.
Targeting small businesses within a 30-mile radius of El Segundo, billboards now appear in downtown Los Angeles, Culver City, West Los Angeles and the L.A. International Airport area, and display two messages:
“El Segundo Is Like Mayberry. Okay, Mayberry With a Wolfgang Puck Cafe” and “Home to 12 of the Fortune 500. Not to Mention Archies Barber Shop.”
City officials said last year’s campaign, “One Mile from the beach, one mile from LAX, a Million Miles from L.A.,” brought 4,300 new jobs to the area.
The billboard campaign is part of an economic redevelopment plan to attract new business to the city, which lost 35,000 jobs when the aerospace industry crashed in the late 1980s, Director of Economic Development Jim Hansen said.
