Trademark Suit Against DreamWorks Dismissed

DreamWorks SKG produced a legal victory as a federal judge dismissed a trademark infringement case brought by the similarly named Dreamwerks Production Group, a Florida company that organizes Star Trek conventions.

Chief U.S. District Judge W. Matthew Byrne Jr. in Los Angeles found that the trademarks were significantly different--and that the companies are in much different lines of work--blunting the plaintiff’s argument that the name could cause consumer confusion.

DreamWorks SKG is a new studio formed in 1994 by moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen.

Dreamwerks filed a $25-million lawsuit last year alleging trademark infringement. Byrne granted DreamWorks’ request for a summary judgment, entering one in favor of the studio.
