Rap star MC Hammer was briefly detained and handcuffed on a Hollywood street corner by Los Angeles Police Department officers who believed he fit the description of a suspect brandishing a gun, authorities said.
When officers discovered that Hammer and a few of his friends were unarmed, they released them, said Lt. Mark Savalla.
“He was very upset over the situation,” Savalla said.
Officers responded to a call about “a man with a gun” at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, Savalla said. Officers arrived at the corner and saw several men, including one who fit the description of the suspect with the gun.
The suspects, one of whom was Hammer, were made to lie face down on the sidewalk, police said, handcuffed and then searched for weapons.
“There were no injuries to the suspects,” Savalla said.
Hammer, whose real name is Stanley Kirk Burrell, won a Grammy award in 1991 for his song “U Can’t Touch This.”
