Obituaries : Alice L. McGinnis, 83; Lifelong County Resident

Alice L. McGinnis, a lifelong Ventura County resident born on her parents’ Somis walnut farm, has died at the age of 83.

A homemaker, McGinnis was married for 64 years to Les McGinnis, who died three years ago. The couple’s daughter, Wanda Braden of Camarillo, said that “her husband and family were everything” to her mother.

Aside from tending her well-kept Oxnard home, McGinnis was known for the roses and carnations in her garden and her date cake, an old family recipe.

McGinnis graduated from Oxnard High School, and she returned to live in Oxnard with her husband for almost 50 years. She has spent the past three years in a retirement home in Ojai.

In addition to her daughter, McGinnis is survived by two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, for whom she sewed clothing and dolls, Braden said.

A private memorial service will be held at Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary in Camarillo at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Donations can be made to the American Heart Assn., 1367 Del Norte Road, Camarillo.
