Police are searching for a 23-year-old man who fled a Brea motel Monday morning after his efforts to cook a batch of speed went up in flames.
Police and firefighters responded to the Regency Motel in the 700 block of South Brea Boulevard about 10:30 a.m. after the guest notified the motel manager that his room was on fire, then fled through the parking lot, Brea Police Sgt. Tom Flenniken said.
“He double-timed it out of there,” Flenniken said of the guest, identified by police as Glenn Steven Sandy. Police said he has addresses in Diamond Bar and Yorba Linda and had checked into the motel Sunday evening.
About 10 people were temporarily evacuated from their rooms as the Orange County Methamphetamine Lab Enforcement Team investigated, Flenniken said.
Firefighters who first entered Room 205 saw black smoke and found a steel pot with liquid, a propane tank and other paraphernalia for heating chemicals, Flenniken said.
They also noticed acid burns on one wall.
Flenniken said witnesses noticed a flash from the room, and that it appeared Sandy first tried to douse the flames with bedding.
