N.H. Governor Calls for Suspending Gas Tax

CONCORD, N.H. — Gov. Steve Merrill on Tuesday proposed suspending New Hampshire’s 18-cent-a-gallon gasoline tax for most of the summer tourist season.
Merrill’s surprise proposal would eliminate the tax from Memorial Day through July.
The Republican governor estimated that the $24 million in lost revenue would be more than made up in other state collections from tourists--spending on lottery tickets, liquor, rooms and meals.
New Hampshire has no income tax and no general sales tax, so other tax sources are important.
House Democratic leader Rick Trombly said he’d support the gas tax cut as long as consumers, not oil companies, benefited.
