Bike Ride to Benefit Diabetes Research

Organizers of this year’s Tour de Cure, an annual bike ride to raise money for the American Diabetes Assn., say their goal this year is $75,000 for the Orange County chapter of the organization.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. May 18 with registration and a continental breakfast at the Newport Dunes Resort. The rides of 10, 20 or 30 miles will start at 9 a.m. and take cyclists through Newport Beach’s Back Bay area and Irvine neighborhoods.
Proceeds from the “bike-a-thon” will support research to find a cure for diabetes, which will kill an estimated 150,000 people in the United States this year.
More than 16 million Americans have diabetes, according to the association, and half of those people are not aware of their condition, which may lead to such complications as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and lower limb amputations.
Registration fee for the Tour de Cure is $20 in advance or $25 at the event. Information: (800) 868-7888.
