Mayor Richard Riordan accepted $1.6 million in additional federal funding Friday from Transportation Secretary Federico Pena for neighborhood improvement programs in Sun Valley, North Hollywood and six other communities in Los Angeles.
Under the project--administered by the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative--about 500 street banners, 400 trees, street lights and bus shelters will be installed in the eight commercial areas, Riordan said at a ceremony in Boyle Heights, one of the program areas.
The Sun Valley project centers on the intersection of Sunland Boulevard and San Fernando Road; the other Valley project focuses on the NoHo Arts District along Lankershim and Magnolia boulevards.
The project also targets neighborhoods in Highland Park, Virgil Village in east Hollywood, Jefferson Park in southwest Los Angeles, Leimert Park in the Crenshaw District and Vermont Square in south-central Los Angeles.
The project began with a $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1994.
