Clemson and Miami Win

OMAHA — Jason Embler’s RBI single keyed a three-run 10th inning as Clemson ended an eight-game losing streak at the College World Series and eliminated Oklahoma State with an 8-5 victory Sunday night.

Fourth-seeded Clemson (50-16) will meet top-seeded Alabama (50-18) Tuesday afternoon. Alabama lost, 15-1, earlier Sunday to Miami. The No. 5 Hurricanes (49-13) are off until Wednesday, when they will meet the Alabama-Clemson survivor.

Clemson came to Sunday’s game trying to avoid its fourth consecutive trip to Omaha without a win. The Tigers had lost eight in a row at the CWS dating back to 1977.

Oklahoma State (45-21) had lost its first two at the CWS only once before in 18 trips, and that was in 1967.

The Cowboys tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth inning, but Clemson scored three in the 10th. After a walk, Matthew LeCroy got a double off Oklahoma State reliever Dave Mauer (6-3) before Brian Thomas relieved and gave up Embler’s go-ahead hit. Thomas gave up another run on a fielder’s choice grounder and Jerome Robinson’s RBI single.

Miami 15, Alabama 1--Pat Burrell, the nation’s leading hitter as a freshman, hit a two-run homer and an RBI single in a 10-run third inning for the Hurricanes.

Burrell, who went three for three to improve his season batting average to .486, hit his 22nd homer, doubled and walked twice.
