Ctvrtlik Will Spike for Charity

U.S. volleyball captain Bob Ctvrtlik is going for more than just a gold medal at the Olympics. He’ll stage a personal spike-a-thon that he hopes will raise $500,000 for children’s charities.
Ctvrtlik, who won a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics and a bronze in 1992, is asking people to make a pledge for every spike he makes. In the last two Olympics, he had averaged 100 spikes.
“My goal is to raise $5,000 for every spike I put down,” he said. “If I can get that goal right around half a million dollars, then it seems to perk everyone’s attention.”
The charities are the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Children’s Hospital San Diego and the Casa De Amparo crisis center for abused children.
