Council Delays Action on Trash Collection
- Share via
The Redondo Beach City Council was to have decided this week if it is going to change garbage collection companies, but so many residents showed up at its Tuesday meeting to ask questions that it postponed the decision for at least two weeks.
Western Waste Industries has had the city’s trash-hauling contract for 15 years, but Waste Management of Los Angeles was the low bidder when the city put out bids four months ago, looking for a company to implement more recycling. With Waste Management, the monthly collection rate would be $9.59 a month instead of the current $11.89 a month and collection would be semi-automated.
Acting City Engineer Steve Huang said several residents were confused about the proposed system. He said the city staff is looking at residents’ suggestions and will come back with another proposal in a few weeks.
