A juvenile diversion program of the Orange County Bar Foundation will receive financial and motivational boosts from recording artist Gloria Estefan’s first concert tour in six years.
Estefan, who will perform at the Pond next Tuesday night, is working with tour sponsor Sears, Roebuck & Co. to provide $1 million for youth empowerment activities in 34 cities across the country.
The Orange County recipient, Shortstop, and its Spanish-language version, Programa Shortstop, will get $20,000 to bolster efforts at steering first-time juvenile offenders away from criminal activities.
“Basically, it’s like reality therapy for the kids,” foundation Executive Director Jane Martin said of the program, which was launched in 1979.
Along with showing troubled teens and their families the consequences of crime, Martin said, Shortstop attempts to improve decision-making skills of the youth and “help them take responsibility for their actions.”
On the day of Estefan’s concert, Shortstop will have a youth rally and summit at the nearby Phoenix Club.
