Man Suspected in Girlfriend’s Killing

A man has been arrested and booked on suspicion of murder after the discovery Aug. 4 of the remains of his 51-year-old girlfriend in a septic tank in a backyard in Littlerock, a desert community southeast of Palmdale.

Coroner’s officials determined that the body had been in the tank for three to five years and that death was caused by a blow to the head. The identity of the woman is being withheld until her family can be notified.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Division is conducting the murder investigation, which led to the arrest Thursday of Steven Swaim, 42, in the Antelope Valley. Antelope Valley deputies refused to comment further on the case, which is still under investigation, but Swaim has apparently confessed to the slaying, according to Officer Elsa Magana at the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau in Los Angeles.

Swaim was booked at the sheriff’s station in Lancaster, where he is being held without bail. Arraignment is scheduled for Monday morning.
