It may not look like much yet. But the Santa Susana magnet high school in Simi Valley is geared up and ready to launch its inaugural school year (B1). . . . The high school, the first of its kind in Ventura County, will emphasize performing arts and technology. . . . “If we follow the other magnet schools we’ve visited, we’ll probably have a waiting list in the next two years, if not next year,” said Judy Cannings, magnet coordinator for the Simi Valley district.

Members of Oxnard-based Ballet Folklorico Mexicapan stomped and twirled Sunday at the Ventura County Fair (B1), one of many acts designed to tap the Latino market. . . . “It’s been that way for several years,” fair spokeswoman Teri Raley said. “We’ve for at least a dozen years had the whole grounds dedicated to a Fiesta Day celebration.”

The Thousand Oaks Little League All-Stars returned home Sunday as the top team in America (B1). So why all the long faces? They wanted to be the best in the world. . . . The team lost 4-2 Saturday to a team from Maracaibo, Venezuela. . . . But that mattered little to boosters who greeted the Little Leaguers at the airport. “As I told the boys, ‘You have nothing to be ashamed of,’ ” said Cathy Frazier, above, greeting husband Craig, one of the team’s two coaches.

Brad Sherman, a Democratic candidate for Congress in a district that includes most of Thousand Oaks, has drawn the ire of some famous cartoonists (B6). . . . The artists say that Sherman and others on the State Board of Equalization are penalizing many in their ranks by calling for a tax on certain illustrations. . . . They are taking aim at the candidate on a World Wide Web site on the Internet. “Sherman is an easy target,” Woodland Hills artist Daryl Cagle said. “He’s running for Congress in a district which probably has more cartoonists than any other in the country.”
