City Council Might Study Land-Use Patterns in Two Areas
- Share via
Seeking ways to generate new revenue, the City Council Monday will consider appointing committees to study land-use patterns near John Wayne Airport and along Mariner’s Mile.
A recent Economic Development Committee report found that the airport area, bounded by MacArthur Boulevard, Campus Drive, Birch Street and Bristol Street North, generates substantially less revenue than adjacent areas.
City planners have proposed forming a five-member advisory committee of property leaseholders and owners to determine whether to hire a full-time city staff person to implement economic development of the area or if merchants working together can do the job.
The City Council will also consider an ordinance to prohibit traffic-generating businesses such as fast-food outlets from Mariner’s Mile until a city-appointed group can identify the best use of land in that area.
Mariner’s Mile is the area between Newport Boulevard and Dover Drive along Pacific Coast Highway.
The committee would review whether the city’s incentives and other zoning regulations discourage economic development, city planners said.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 3300 Newport Blvd.
