SANTA ANA — A nurse at the Orange County Women’s Jail found a 41-year-old woman hanging in her cell Tuesday evening, and efforts to revive the inmate failed, sheriff’s officials said.
The woman, who was being held in a one-person cell in the medical ward because of a medical condition, was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana at 6:54 p.m., sheriff’s officials said.
She was found hanging in the cell during a routine check at 6:05 p.m., about 20 minutes after the staff had last checked on her. Sheriff’s Lt. Lynn Nehring said the district attorney’s office is investigating the incident.
Nehring said he could not comment on what the woman used to hang herself because it is pertinent to the investigation.
Officials were withholding her name pending notification of next of kin.
