Happening at the Fair

ENTERTAINMENT: The family singing group the Jets will perform at 6 and 9 p.m. Saturday and at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Pepper Street Legends stage.
HOT RODS: The National Hot Rod Assn.’s exhibit will have hands-on, interactive “gravity drag racing,” where visitors can push on the gas pedal and watch their miniature cars race down a ramp in the Fairplex 3A building.
RED ROCK RUN: This ride simulates the steamy core of an active volcano where hot lava is mined.
CONTESTS: Rooster-crowing and hen-cackling, second- and third-grade spelling bees, T-shirt painting, milk drinking, Lego construction, ice cream making and mother-daughter look-alike contests are scheduled for today through the weekend.
AGRICULTURE: Dairy cattle and goats will compete in Rings 2 and 3 at the open and junior levels. The open Roadster pony competition also begins today.
CELEBRATION: A fireworks display marks the Fiesta del Castillo during the Mexican Independence Day celebration Sunday beginning at 7 p.m. at the grandstand. A parade, mariachis, a ballet folklorico, skydivers and Espuela de Oro, a women’s equestrian group, will highlight the event.
The fair runs today through Sept. 29 at the L.A. Fairplex, 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona. Monday-Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday-Sundays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is $9, $7 for seniors, and $5 for ages 6 to 12. (909) 623-3111.
