Technology may make us more honest. A vivid example is occurring now in California in a test between the IRS and lending institutions. A pilot program allows lenders to check whether a loan applicant’s claimed income is significantly bigger than what was reported to the IRS--allowing both to investigate more thoroughly for possible fraud. Lenders can also easily check certain data through basic Internet searches.
