Karl F. Matson; Southern California Sculptor

Karl F. Matson, 53, sculptor with works in permanent museum collections in Los Angeles and Minneapolis. Born in Minneapolis, Matson earned a master’s of fine arts degree from USC and did most of his work in Southern California. He created large sculptures for the Marymount College campus in Rancho Palos Verdes and a business park in Pasadena. Matson also created an installation titled “Guns and Butter, Bombs and Bread” in the Gallerie Mladych in Prague, Yugoslavia. The sculptor said all his works represented “the joy of growing up male in America.” Represented by the Ruth Bloom Gallery in Los Angeles, Matson has work in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Minnesota Institute of Art. He won awards from the Los Angeles County Arts Council and Rutgers University, among others. On Oct. 15 in Los Angeles of a heart attack.
