Lighter Winds Aid Fire Crews, but Big Sur Blaze Defies Control

BIG SUR — Light winds allowed firefighters to initiate an air attack on the latest wildfire along the Big Sur coast Saturday.
But the winds were strong enough to keep the 2,400 firefighters from gaining control over the wildfire.
The blaze, burning over 4,400 acres, remained 30% contained Saturday night.
Rains on Friday helped keep the fire from spreading farther into Los Padres National Forest, a spokesman said.
Gusty winds of more than 35 mph had grounded aircraft early Saturday, but the wind eased in the afternoon.
Much of the Ventana Wilderness remained closed to hikers. The Pfeiffer-Big Sur and Andrew Molera state parks also were closed.
