De Anza Expedition to ‘Revisit’ Valley Will Be Reenacted

The 220th anniversary of the expedition of Capt. Juan Bautista De Anza was officially recognized by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors this week, and a reenactment of the journey will pass through the San Fernando Valley this weekend.
In 1775 and 1776, De Anza of Spain led an expedition on a 1,468-mile trip from Sonora, Mexico to San Francisco, establishing the first overland supply route to Spanish outposts in California.
A reenactment of the journey is scheduled to pass through the county today through Monday on its way north.
The relay will stop Monday at De Anza Park in Calabasas. Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky will speak, and the Santa Monica Trails Council will stage a reenactment of the adventure.
