CHRISTOPHER AND HIS KIND by Christopher Isherwood (North Point Press: $13, 339 pp.). The first volume of Isherwood’s autobiography covers the years he spent in Germany during the 1930s, which provided the material for his celebrated Berlin stories. He introduces the friends who served as models for his characters and contrasts his real experiences with his fictionalized portrait of the Weimar era. Isherwood and W. H. Auden were lifelong comrades, and his account of their travels in China read like a report from two brilliant but naughty schoolboys. “Christopher and His Kind” is being reissued in conjunction with “My Guru and His Disciple,” his account of his later life in Southern California.
