Epps, Briones Combine to Give Wilson 3-A Title Over Van Nuys

Normann Epps’ sliding touchdown catch helped give Wilson High a 14-7 victory over Van Nuys for the City Section Division 3-A championship in front of an estimated 2,500 at the Coliseum Friday night.
Academically ineligible the first 10 weeks of the season, the sophomore wide receiver had to get his grades up and hope that Wilson (10-4) would make the playoffs just so that he could suit up.
Midway through the third quarter, on second and nine from the 10-yard line, Wilson quarterback Julio Briones looked for Epps on a short post pattern.
Epps was well-covered, but the ball was a bit underthrown and he cut the route short for a sliding touchdown catch.
Robert Williamson scored on a four-yard run for Van Nuys (9-5) in the second quarter, but Wilson tied it on the ensuing series, Briones diving in from a yard out.
