Two Convicted of Running Unlicensed Care Facilities

In a crackdown on a scam that preys on the sick and the elderly, a Los Angeles woman and an associate were convicted Friday of running unlicensed board and care facilities.
Investigators said that Gloria L. Cohen, 56, and Rudolph Walcott, 55, charged people living on government subsistence about $500 a month to share a room with up to three people in single-family homes. Conditions at some of the homes, investigators said, were hazardous and inadequate for the residents.
Officials said many of the boarders needed close care and supervision, which Cohen and Walcott were not licensed to provide.
Cohen faces a maximum penalty of up to three years in jail and fine of up to $6,000. Walcott faces up to 2 1/2 years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000. Sentencing is scheduled for April 1.
