In the Division IV finals:
Sanchez and Garcia win titles--Eddie Sanchez of Santiago and Dennis Garcia of Garden Grove won Division IV titles at Santiago High.
In the team standings, Palmdale Highland came out on top with a score of 180, followed by Norwalk Glenn (168.5), La Puente Bishop Amat (166.5) and Santiago (139.5). Garden Grove was ninth with 60.5 points.
Garcia’s 215 pound match was one of the more thrilling of the final round. He was up against Quartz Hill’s Jacob Waasdrop, the section defending champion.
With Garcia trailing, 2-1, late in the third period, Waasdrop was called for stalling with 20 seconds remaining. A point was awarded to Garcia and that forced the match into sudden-death overtime.
After neither wrestler could manage a point during the two-minute extra period, a coin flip was held to determine which would start in the down position to start the second overtime.
Garcia won the flip and chose to go down. Ten seconds later, he worked his way out of Waasdrop’s grasp for a one-point escape and the victory.
“I thought I had the endurance to come into double overtime and get the escape,” Garcia said. “I thought I was getting cheated during regulation [when Waasdrop was stalling].”
Sanchez had a somewhat easier time than Garcia as he built a 5-1 lead after the first period against Jair Vargas of Glenn in the 130-pound division, and went on to a 12-4 victory.
“I overpowered him and he made some mistakes,” Sanchez said. “I used throws mostly to overpower him.”
Other county wrestlers to advance to the Masters were Santiago’s Ronald Romero (135) and Los Amigos’ Harvey Garcia (125), each placing third.
